Every time a new sales report for Grand Theft Auto V comes out revealing that the game has once again sold millions of copies the same running joke circulates across the internet: Who on earth hasn’t played GTA 5 yet? Well, yes that person was me. At least, until this week.

Now, after spending about 10 hours with the game, I feel like I made a huge mistake by ignoring it for all these years. To be honest, GTA 5 feels just as enjoyable today as people have been claiming for years.

I always felt that such an old open-world game probably wouldn’t feel quite as special anymore. After all, it is a game from 2013. But the moment I started the Story Mode, it didn’t take long for me to realize exactly what it was that Rockstar had created something that completely transformed the entire gaming industry.

Yes, the game features all the same madness, profanity, crazy missions, and dark humor for which the GTA series is renowned. But what is truly surprising is how perfectly everything fits within the game’s world.

Why Do Michael, Franklin, and Trevor Feel So Real?

GTA 5’s greatest strength isn’t its world it’s its characters. The banter between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor feels so natural that, at times, it feels as though you’re listening to a conversation from a movie or eavesdropping on real people.

The joking interactions between Franklin and his friends feel exactly like the conversations we have with our own friends. Meanwhile, Michael’s world weariness and Trevor’s sheer insanity make the game even more intriguing.

The entire tone of the game shifts the moment Trevor makes his entrance. The way Steven Ogg portrays Trevor is truly remarkable.

Los Santos Still Feels Like a Living City

I’ve played older GTA titles in the past, and I’m also a huge fan of Red Dead Redemption 2. Consequently, I assumed that the world of GTA 5 would feel dated by now.

Every street, every billboard, and every minor random event breathes life into the city. You might spot a bizarre advertisement around one corner, or stumble into a hilarious mission around the next.

One moment you’re engaged in a serious conversation, and the very next, you’re mowing down aliens with a machine gun. This is precisely what makes GTA 5 so special it never limits itself.

Rockstar’s Writing Remains Exceptional

In one particular mission, Michael catches his wife with her tennis coach. In a fit of rage, he teams up with Franklin to demolish the coach’s house.

As I played through the mission, a single question kept looping through my mind Dude, how on earth could a tennis coach afford such a massive, luxurious mansion? The funny thing is, Rockstar actually incorporated that very question into the narrative itself.

A short while later, it’s revealed that the house didn’t even belong to the tennis coach in the first place. It’s these small, subtle writing details that set GTA 5 apart from other games.

Yes, the shooting mechanics along with a few other gameplay systems do feel a bit dated by modern standards. The gunplay unmistakably retains that distinct 2013 vibe.
But despite all that, the game remains incredibly fun. Driving cars, undertaking missions, roaming around the city, and the sudden bursts of madness all of this remains entertaining even today.
